Research

For as long as humans have worked together, power has governed what they can achieve. It is a widely recognized piece of knowledge that how power is used is central to whether individual employees, teams, and organizations
are able to successfully accomplish their goals.

However, repeated evidence reveals a troubling pattern: managers still fail to use power effectively to lead others, while employees struggle to navigate the power dynamics that define their teams. Therefore, my research explores how power is enacted, interpreted, and managed in teams—by individual employees, team leaders, and organizations—and how these dynamics shape organizational effectiveness. I focus on three interrelated questions:

1 | How can team members navigate the power dynamics that unfold in their
everyday work?

2 | How can leaders exercise and leverage power to lead teams more effectively?

3 | How can organizations construct team environments that channel power productively?

I bring novel theoretical lenses to bear on these questions, using experience sampling studies, field surveys, and laboratory experiments in my research. My work has been published in Social and Personality Psychology Compass, and I regularly present at the Academy of Management Annual Meetings.
